What the Shell

16th May 2015

What the Shell – a fun connect 5 style game involving turtles.

What The Shell Gameplay
The Esperanto word for ‘Turtle’ is ‘Testudo’

At the start of each turn both players place their turtle at the same time. This means you don’t know where your opponent will place their turtle. To win the game you must get 5 turtles in a row.

What The Shell Victory

You can capture your opponent’s turtles by ‘sandwiching’ exactly 2 (not more or less) of their turtles. When you capture a turtle it will play a satisfying sinking animation.

If both players place a turtle on the same square an egg is created. You can hatch this egg by capturing an opponent’s turtle.

The game offers a helpful tutorial with a wise panda showing you how to play the game. After a few matches the rules of the game become clear.

You can play against a computer, nearby players over WiFi or share your iPad in a hotseat mode. In hotseat mode the first player’s turtle fades away so their opponent can’t see their turtle placement.

The free version has a full screen advert that appears at the start of each match. You can purchase a lifetime turtle club membership for £1.49 (or your regional equivalent). A lifetime membership currently disables adverts, but more features are coming in the future including an online mode.
